In overall the architecture has some similarities with the Transputer.
The communication functions are implemented on an instruction/register
level within the processing
elements. That is in contrast to most other MIMD machines from not only
around that time but also nowdays who use memory-mapped communication
chips in conjunction with "standard" processors (i.e. Connection Machine
5 with SPARCs or any recent x86 based Cray machine).
