Lossy compression is *optional*. The G.711 "codec" is effectively a null
operation. It gives full-duplex 64kb/s transmission and is indistinguishable
from ISDN. Even if you were to do it over cellular.
You get what you pay for, and compression is used to (try to!) save money at
the expense of call quality. And free VoIP such as Skype is worth what you paid
for it.
