Not to drift too far afield, but the US spends about $1.2 Billion
(2005 numbers) in Federal subsidies and price supports, as well as
import quotas. This means that domestic growers can export sugar and
sell it for less abroad than it costs domestically. The same story
obtains for other crops such as cotton.
Any more and I'd be straying into politics.
