There was a Usenet FAQ that covered this, but since no one seems to remember it..
"Straight 8" refers to the original PDP-8 (note the absence of any slash after
the 8)
Follow-on implementations have a slash to denote various models. They were, in rough
chronological order:
PDP-8/S
PDP-8/I
PDP-8/L
PDP-8/E
PDP-8/F
PDP-8/M
PDP-8/A
All but the 8/S are built from TTL logic.
At this point, the PDP-8 and 8/S are not as commonly available as the other models
and go for much more than the others.
