Chuck mentioned WECo. Certainly it was in common use in the mid-1950s
in COs.
Yup, you'll see crossbar switches full of it. Of course, not using
30AWG Kynar-insulated wire, more like 26AWG. It may still be used;
I'm not up to date on the latest switching gear.
Generally speaking, if Ma Bell adopted a technology, it was probably
pretty durable. Modular plugs excepted.
