Sometimes they just seem to go. This was a common
occurrence w/the Tandy 2000's p/s. It could be a
faulty design. Regardless of why it happened, if you
fix the problem, your p/s will work again. For a time
anyway. It might not be worth worrying about.
doing some quick googling, many of the sites that had info on Apple III power
supply repairs talked about a failing electrolytic cap, although the package on
the one i found with pics didn't look like any electrolytic I had looked at.
