recall seeing a 405 line BW broadcast during a trip to England in the
70s and thought it was the worst picture I'd ever seen since my
family's 9" Philco set. The frame rate was quite visible to my eye.

Note that it's not 100% authentic, the film editing done to get the
studio monitors visible is obvious.
Being used to a 60Hz field rate would make the 50Hz frame rate flickery
and obvious, because it's right on the edge of what the human eye can
perceive as a solid image.
