That would be me :) While I applaud the effort to build a functioning
replica. That is way to much work for me. Doing a "modern" version with
small SMT components would allow for more freedom and it would be fun to

but it would be better in some ways than doing an
original form factor 8. There are Pros to that too, but obtaining
supplies / parts are less in your control if you go with an actual 8
and try to match the original (using mixture of old and new parts)
and also presents some problems too (wire wrap backplane would be
fun).

At the moment I'm at the stage where I probably don't realize the amount
of work that needs to be done, which is a good thing :)
