These days you should be using sudo.
That's a pretty big sweeping assertion, one with which I
wholeheartedly disagree. Sudo has been around for a very long time,
and while it makes great sense for newbies, it gets in the way when
people who know what they're doing are trying to manage a system.
Likewise, having a root account makes great sense for newbies, but for
more experienced users sudo is the way to go.
Let the newbies make their "oops I accidentally /var while logged in as
root", and let the proper sysadmins use the grown-up tools.
