To make things more confusing and frustrating, the 5v parts have a
"cycle limit" of 10**12 while the 3.6v parts are "unlimited"
according
to the datasheets I have. The 5v parts appear to be about 3 years back
and are not in the current 'catalog'.
For my experience, the 5v parts have been truly "drop in replacement"
for the volatile parts. I have no experience with drop-in on the 3.6
volt part, since I crafted the circuit specifically for that device.
Last I'll say on the topic. If I still had an 8E, I'd likely be more
involved ;-)

I think the FRAM issue is a moot point. The
Ramtron FM18L08 has the
same
pinout and package as the SRAM shown in the schematic.
I think you could just leave out the battery, jumper the power diode,
and install FRAM.
Same pinout, yes, but it's only rated to 3.6V according to the datasheet

I don't think that will be a drop-in replacement in Steve's original
circuit.
