Expander gates will be about as clear as mud in the modern logic diagram sense if you look
at a single chip. Make sure to look up the 74H60 or 74H62 which is the "other
half".
There was an early 70's TI TTL book (not so much databook but more of a
cookbook/how-to book) aimed towards college students or guys new to TTL that illustrated
expander gates in useful ways. By the 80's there are still pages in the TI databooks
for the expander gates but you'd be stumped trying to decode them.
