One other thing may have happened over time, in the transformer.
Many transformers were originally manufactured with 2 primary windings.
This way, they could be easily configured for 220 or 110.
In cases used for 110, the windings would be paralleled inside
the case and then only one pair of wires run external.
It is possible that from stress or corrosion that one of the wires
has gone open. This would match the problem that you are
seeing.
