You didn't say how much current the system in question normally
draws. It might be informative to take a very large incandescent
lamp (or even an electric space heater) and connect it in series with
the mains supply to the unit, provided the voltage drop across same
wasn't excessive.
When the unit failed, the breaker shouldn't trip, given that you now
have a resistance to absorb the excess current. This might give you
time to determine what's going on in the unit.
