Part of my reason for looking at compact fluorescents is that I
specifically want 12- or 24-volt versions that can be run from a bank of
deep-cycle batteries, charged by a combination of wind turbine and solar
panels.
At my house up north, we lose power for a few days every winter when the
120mph winds take out power lines. If I was running lights off-grid, I
wouldn't have this problem and I'd have much lower bills too.
