We use IM heavily at work. I'm of the opinion that it actually
decreases productivity. Some people are starting to turn it, email
and the phones off as the only way to get work done. There is such a
thing as being to available.
I don't know, I find IM and email fairly easy to ignore, whether or not
I'm doing it on purpose.
I find that working from 12p to 8p ( or later), or in our machine room
at work, cuts down on the distractions a lot too.
