I've had the same experience.

FWIW, I now use a Umax 4550 which has a transparency handler and was
rather inexpensive among scanners with that feature. Driver support
is not the greatest (in particular, none for Mac though third party
drivers are available and excellent). But it works and is fast thanks
to Firewire.
On the other hand, even its max resolution would be marginal at beast
for fiche.
