Have you checked that the power supply rails are the right voltage and
stale/ripple-free? I think my next move would be to stick a 'scope on the
+5V rail, and any othes I could indentify.

Well, I think I have located the problem. Opening the case revealed
that a wire has come loose from what I take to be the flyback
transformer (based on descriptions I've read). I have taken some
pictures and uploaded them to

The thing is, I'm not really sure where that wire is supposed to go...
does it just need to stick on to the side in some way, which is why
the solder probably broke in the first place?
