 I'm surprised you'd even take that swing. 
My apologies. I didn't word it clearly, and you have, 
unfortuantely misinterpretted it.

I was not claiming that Bell Labs did nothing, and I certainly wasn;'t 
claiming the UK GPO did mroe than Bell Labs. I was simply giving that as 
anotehr example of a telephoen comany that did significant -- very 
significant -- computer work.

Off the top of my head, I can think of the transistor (point contact 
bipolar, and IIRC they did the foundation work fo the FET), unix (of 
course), a lot of coding therory (Shannon et al), I beleive they did some 
work on liquid crystals. And that's without looking anythign up.
