I'm working on setting one up that is mysql based
on
classiccmp.org, since
mysql is already there, as is php.
Now, hold the horses, I don't want to put you down, but first of all,
we don't need another 3-5 new computers lists and collectors lists.
It's completely useless to have lots of ego-database projects. Better
join an existing: first of all, there's already Tizianos great list
and collectors data base, now at
http://www.1000bit.net/
(formerly known as Il mio angelo - My Angel :)
He has redone his website during this summer, and it's most definitly
worth to give it a try. To my knowledge it's the largest existing
cooperative project in this area. If your unhappy with some features,
just tell him, and I bet he will update them soon.
Second, our beloved friend an all time hot shoot Sallam is tries to
setup a similar system on his vintage market place. So, if a european
source is suspect to you, go ahead and see what he has in mind.
Last but not least, the question was rather about a Wiki, not just
a computer list (Hans Pufahls CCCC is still, and maybe will ever,
be the largest around). A Wikipedia is ment as an encyclopedia, and
as such a resource of everything, not just computers. Of course we
might go ahead an do our own little thing ... and let the rest of
the world pass us, or we join and tell others about our knowledge.
Just think where Jane Doe will look out for information. At some tiny
geek site, or the webs (and worlds) largest comperehensive encyclopedia
(*1), a place that she already uses whenever she would have taken a book
in the ages before the web?
wikipedia.org already houses some quite extensive information about
classic machinery. Just check Atari, Osborne or DEC
http://en2.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atari
http://en2.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osborne
http://en2.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osborne_Computer_Corporation
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DEC
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Equipment_Corporation
And unlike a narrow, just computer based list, entering Osborne shows
the full portential of an encyclopedia of everything.
So to me, there's no real decision to be made - just join (both
projects) and offer your knowledge directly to the world.
Gruss
H.
*1 - Just recently I heared that wikipedia surpasses the actual issue
of the encyclopedia Britanica in terms of size (words) and topics
