Interesting read. I worked for a software company in the late 80's that
was started by some former Tandem folks who were trying to bring some of
the software transaction protection concepts he mentions to PC's. A
virtual machine was utilized to help address the lack of hardware
robustness. It was a great concept, but alas, the PC's of the time (and
OS's) were not up to the task. That and some unfortunate
technical/business decisions doomed the product.
