This would have been an acceptable speed on a hardwired terminal line into,
for example, a DEC-20. Terminals aren't always connected to modems.
Yes,9600 is a acceptable direct connect speed.
The main problem I find with what few terminals I have used is 'line
scroll' flicker - the characters on the bottom line not cleared and
flicker for a bit until the CR comes in after a LF.
In 1976 I would have been happy to find a local data center, but
computing was expensive back then - $1 minute long distance phone,
$1 data center usage. ( Rounded figures ).
