Odd feature..
The engine and transmission (wether manual or automatic)
use the _same_ oil. I am told the automatic was none-too-reliable, but
geting it to work at all using engine oil as the hydraulic fluid was an
achievement.

I've never been in an automatic Mini. Was there enough spare power?
Not really :-). I've never travelled in one, but a teacher at school had
one that I fixed for him at one point (he was a physcis teacher, and
couldn't understand some simple bits of th electrics of his Mini. Go
figure).
I now have the full offical workshop manual for the original Mini
(actually the Australian manual, but that's just the English manaul with
some bits added). It does cover the automatic transmission in detail
