Er, analogue systems can't vary the bandwidth based on demand, so it doesn't
get better if nobody else is using it. It's a circuit-switch network, not
packet-switched!
Your nostalgia is getting the better of you if you think that was "perfect
sound". The thing was limited to about 2.5kHz, and there was all of the digital
chatter from the in-band signalling. About the only great thing about it was
that it existed at all.
