Even your example "portable regarding
endianess" is only relative;
does this putatively portable code actually work in unusual cases
such as PDP-endian, or just the two common endiannesses?
^^^^^^^^^^
What does that term mean? ;->
After all, there are 4 different architectures which were all produced
under the rubric "PDP-x" by Digital Equipment Corporation, and only
one of those has any oddities to its endian behaviour. The others all
name the high-order bit of the word "0", with the low-order bit
varying in name among "11", "17", and "35".
