It really is an amazing circuit.
I think my favorite observed application was a series of them used as
touch-sensitive switches for preset station selection in a mid-1970's
Sherwood FM tuner.
It was the type of app that might get mentioned in some book or article
as an idea, but not likely to be used in real-world production. I kind
of wonder how they stood up in those FM tuners in high-static
climates/environments.
