There was also a project at around the same time that involved making
your own Morse-code keyboard. It used commodity switches to create a
three-tier keyboard and I think didn't use much more than relays and
diodes to do the job.
Anyone remember that one? Those just happen to stick in my mind from
that time. Of course now it would just be a sub $1 MCU with a PC
keyboard, but along with those tic-tac-toe machines that used stepping
relays the projects were pretty memorable as an example of what could be
done with early experimenter digital electronics.
