You (Nigel, not Dave) mentioned that you didn't think it was a
microcontroller because there's no ROM nearby. Don't put too much
weight on that, because the 8048 has an on-chip ROM.
I was gonna say... My recollection is that the 8048 is
the masked rom variant in that family. It wouldn't surprise
me to see one with a house part number, given that
(though I know at least a few old Epsons that had
8048s for the parallel controller and didn't bother re-
marking them).
