Looking at the bright side SRM (SCSI card in question is in an alpha)
had the guts to say - can not see the hard drive correctly so can not
boot. So I knew I was doing somerthing stupid.

bits that stopped the wide drives from working correctly. The genuine
DEC cable I borrowed from a friend on a couple of occasions always
seemed to work properly.
Are you mixing wide and narrow stuff there?
