That was inheritance from NEXTSTEP/OPENSTEP and you're right, it
didn't really disappear until 10.4 or 10.5 IIRC. It was ugly, it was
even worse in OPENSTEP!
As has been discussed somewhat recently on this list, I recall that the end of NetInfo
coincided with the departure of Tevanian. Draw your own conclusions.
The only way I could ever think to describe NetInfo to outsiders was, "Think of
Windows' registry, but worse."
