No, but Linus doesn't like to be tied down or held back.
If you read the discussions that took place, Linus took the path of least
resistance and which took the least amount of work to implement. Someone
submitted a patch to axed support for the i386 and added support for some
other x86 extensions that the i386 support "was in the way of". #ifdef...
