Hi there! Interesting to read, what others do with their
vintage machines ... and for what reasons ;-)
systems? I'm curious, what are people using
things like Sparc 2's through
20's for? Or even Ultra 60's and older?
I am still using an Indigo2 for my private daily computing (apart
from web browsing) and I am regularly operating Sparc
20s for
hardware related projects. As mentioned in some replys, they are
rock solid and I appreciate my sbus board connecting to various
Transputers. Those make nice toys for hardware projects since
they are quite simple to interface hardware to and with Helios
run a 32 bit OS which boots within seconds. So a cycle of
"testing - shutting down - using the solder iron - power up -
boot - test again" lasts only 30 seconds.
Here is a picture of one of my setups using a SS20 for reverse
engineering a vintage military computer:

Apart from this I am using Netra T1 as webserver (Solaris'
virtualization with Zones and the ZFS makes a great and reliable setup)
and firewall/router. Bandwidth of those is still better than
the connection to the internet.
Happy vintage computing,
Erik.
