It would seem to me that plastic is unstable enough
(it's a major
headache for a lot of non-computer museums). ?If I were a conservator
(and I'm not), if appearance was important, I'd probably spray with a
water-based paint that can be easily washed off.
This is one method that is used. Often a wax undercoat is applied,
which makes the whole process pretty reversible.
I am not sold on the retobrite method - it just seems like it somehow
damages the plastic. I think I would rather give yellowed plastic
(which, for the stuff I collect, is not too much of an issue) a thin
overspray of latex paint - pretty harmless stuff.
