Carterphone V Western Electric (SCROTUS) did over-ride TPC policy to
permit direct connect modems. Carterphone was essentially bankrupted by
the legal costs. AT one time, there was a leaked DOJ memo suggesting
that if Carterphone closed, it could help anti-trust litigation. But,
Carterphone stayed around on the edge for many years, possibly due to
anonymous cash donations.
