Wasn't the 4010 superceded by the 4050 (and the 4009, the inverting
version, by the 4049)? I've used them as level shifters from 12V CMOS to TTL.
And since when haev SMD parts not been user-replaceable? Well, OK, if I
am replacing an chip (SMD or otherwise), presumably I am not able to use
the product at the same time. But other than that I don't see the problem.
You need to get a better class of users :-)
