My memory was that back in the day when the TU58 was new, the PDP-8
community was very excited about inexpensive block-addressable storage
but it came to naught because the TU58 RSP protocol relied on "break"
to synchronize the host and the drive and it's not easy to send a
break from a pre-DECmate serial port. I remember a lot of discussion
published in LUG newsletters, but I don't think anything was every
produced in the way of an OS/8 driver.
Serial ports and PDP-8s and Kermit certainly go well together.
I still favor polished brass and hardwood, rather than cheap plastic;
looking at my DE1 board here. I was looking around if I could get a
brass front panel made using one of the Front Panel designer sites
on the internet.I was hoping to use it for tube audio project and
have VERY good ground. How ever looking around found this page with a
Steam Punk view point on revising old TTY's
http://www.aetherltd.com/index.html
They do sell some TTY supplies and seem to give good advice for
older mechanical things. I hope this will give some help for the
people with TTY's and computers.
