I don't need to have monetary value attached to
artifacts I like
to convince others they are worthwhile.
When I add to my collection I assume that the money spent will never be
recovered (the device has no value except to my curiosity). This attitude
keeps me from buying anything I really don't want and it keeps me from
buying on speculation that the thing will rise in value.
