Thanks - after posting, I noticed that pin 7 was missing in the connector,
which also hinted at CGA.
Furthermore, I got the original monitor stand with the 1000 (just not the
original screen), and spotted that the impressions in the stand's foam
surface match the bottom of the 720, suggesting that someone had at least
tried using it with the machine.
Some more googling suggests that there was a Taxan 770 display, and that
one *was* VGA - so I wonder if it's an OCR error at work in the pricelists
that I found online, and the 720 that I was seeing listed as 800x600
multisync capable was actually supposed to be a 770.
