I do find that threading for this list is utterly
screwed up (e.g.
[...]), and I'm not sure where that nonsense creeps in - e.g. if it's
my mail client (Thunderbird), or gmail trying to do something clever,
or even the list software.
I don't know whether it's relevant, but I do regularly see list mail
with syntactically invalid References: headers. Most often this is
because something has produced headers with commas instead of
whitespace between message-IDs; occasionally it's because a line
overflows SMTP's limit and gets broken, producing an unclosed
message-ID and then an unopened message-ID. If your client depends on
References: and the like for threading, this could be related.
