I REMEMBER IANA
by Vint Cerf
That someone was Jonathan B. Postel, our Internet Assigned Numbers
Authority, friend, engineer, confidant, leader, icon, and now, first
of the giants to depart from our midst.
I am saddened and dismayed to read of Jon's death. I had communicated
with him several times via email. Mostly about RFC's, methods, and
just plain help. He was always quick to reply.
Jon, our beloved IANA, is gone. Even as I write these
words I cannot quite
grasp this stark fact. We had almost lost him once before in 1991.
Well, he had a plan for most contigencies, something we could all learn
from.
And he could be stubborn beyond all expectation. He
could have outwaited the Sphinx in a staring contest, I think.
No Comment... 8-) Sometimes from a simple question, I would detect
some of the emotion behind the answer. He was an opinionated man.
Not that it was bad mind you...
Mr. Postel's passing is a sad thing, but some will be glad...
