Great! So I could possibly find some ratty 3.5" external 2gs drives,
disassemble them, and drop them into, say, a IIfx or IIci?

IIfx and IIci came with HD superdrives. The mac II and Mac SE (not SEFD) had
DD drives.
All the Apple made IIgs drives I know about are DD.
