The one reason is to use the full track width instead of two stereo tracks. I had
some strange effects when dubing some old interviews from cassette with a stereo
deck that went away when I found a NOS Panasonic. Those things were made for a VERY
long time. Of course, the plastic transport and belts are crap..
I still have to experiment using it to recover a box of VERY old Sphere casettes.
