I rescued most of a Kaypro PC a couple of days ago - a somewhat interesting
beast, being a backplane-based XT compatible. It was actually a stray ST225
drive which I saw first (and which I expect belongs with the system) before
I spotted the machine itself, although of course it wouldn't surprise me if
the drive is snafu.
I have the CPU card, along with FDC/mem/RS232/parallel card and ST506/412
controller card (plus case, PSU, backplane). What I don't have is a
keyboard, display adapter, floppy drive, or monitor.
Questions:
1) Does the machine need a specific keyboard, or will any old XT keyboard
work? (I say that like it's easy to find XT keyboards these days!)
2) I'm assuming the bus is 8-bit ISA; will an 8-bit VGA card likely work
(as I have VGA CRTs laying around)? (And does anyone know what display
adapter the machine would originally have had?)
3) Will it run plain ol' MS-DOS, or does it need something a little more
uncommon due to hardware quirks?
It's very much early days right now; I've not tested the PSU yet, who knows
what faults the boards may have (but at least they're mostly obtainable and
socketed ICs) and all of my spare floppy drives are in overseas storage, so
I'm seeing this as a long-term project, but it would be nice to eventually
return it to operational state, even if only as a floppy-only system.

It wouldn't be a good item on ebay unless the seller was enough of a dick to
break the system up to ensure maximum profit.
Capitalism called. Now if someone wants the system they have to fight god
who knows for the software to actually use it.
I need to rid myself of an IBM S/34, (4) 5250 terminals and a printer that

Heres the unboxing photos, the original owner used it for one project
and then boxed it up and put it away, he even went as far as removing
the winchester hard drive and put it in its original box. I had to
install the drive, give it a good firm wack because of stiction and
reinit the drive, but its fully functional, The only thing I can
think of using it for right now is a VT100 terminal to my Mac like I was
doing with the Apple IIc

I think we can all agree by now that once we put something on the internet,
regardless of obligations or contracts or licensing someone else will use it
without permission and shame on you for complaining over a photograph that
he did not even hotlink. What do you want? The auction to have the infamous
"IMAGE NOT AVAILABLE" placecard so we can all at least wonder what exactly
is for sale? Generally when I see another site using my photographs (and
normally from my photobucket but that's the reason I pay for uncapped
premium four times a year) I'm proud of it because it means my photos were
decent enough to appeal to someone else. Makes no sense to photograph your
systems if you don't want people oogling over it.
Regardless, he has updated the listing with a proper photograph of HIS
system.

PS, there are still a couple of NorthStar Advantages for sale. One is in
original packaging and another wrapped in plastic. These are for pick up
only in the Dayton Ohio area. No shipping due to the fragile nature of
these classic CP/M computers.
Does anyone have disk images of System/34 or System/36 software? SSP is most useful, diagnostics next, but anything else won't be useful until I wind up with SSP. Since I am going on disability and will have more free time, I'm kicking around the idea of trying to write an emulator for one or the other or both.
Modnote: Disregard copy sent from wrong address.
I was lucky enough to find a DEC rainbow 100 in all original boxes, with

I've got an 11/45 + 2 RK05 that I acquired more than 25 years ago, in a
running state,
but is no longer working after a move in 1992. I also have a full print
set and bunch of RK05 disks. I also acquired a second CPU and just pulled
the
cards for spares, so there is an entire set of spare cards for the CPU, as
well
as an extra power supply.
I've realized that I have too many interests and too little space so want to
find a good home for it. Obviously it will require some restoration after
sitting for 20 years.
Any recommendations on how to sell and a fair price?

I picked up a users manual for this, but it doesn't have detailed service information.
Anyone have a real service manual for these? Chuck Guzis mentioned that the 8" floppy encoding
was GCR, the disks aren't readable with a normal FDC.

Was that before or after the split of District 214 into 214 and 215? When
I graduated from Arlington High School in 1969, Rolling Meadows was part
of the same district, and the Computer Math (i.e., FORTRAN IV) class was
taught using the 1401 at the school district building near the Mt. Prospect/
Des Plaines city limits line. Monday and Thursday evenings down Northwest
Highway.
(Lemme see, Arlington, Prospect, Rolling Meadows, Elk Grove, Palatine,
Fremd, Wheeling and Buffalo Grove, if I remember the flags on the gym wall
correctly. Hersey and something to the south came into being my senior
year. That was District 214. Lots of people I knew went to Harper as a
start on their college careers.)
The next year, 3 of the schools in the district got 1620s (a good friend
who was a year younger was the operator for the one at Arlington). By
the mid-1970s, I was out of touch with anyone in that area and don't know
how things developed, though I did hear about the district split from a
freshman at Ohio State when I was a senior (1975).
HP 2000, hmm? We're in the middle of putting a 21MX and a later 1000 into
service at the museum.

Folks,
Does anyone have a hardcopy of the DL10 (PDP-10/PDP-11 interface) maintenance manual? We have a microfiche of it, but the detail in a very important drawing is lost, and we very much need that to understand some of the verbiage that accompanies it.

Just an FYI, since I figure there might be one ortwo people here who are

...is anyone familiar with these terminals?
I have one hooked up to my linux box, via a null modem cable.
That works fine, but no matter how I set things, I can't get it to
display to display drawing characters properly, no matter how I set
$TERM and how I set the settings on the terminal.
In fact, the only way I can get it to really work (without the drawing
characters) is in vt100 mode. Very strange...

jht,
Yes it was a comercial kit from back in the day. It has everthing on
one circuit board the size of the Mod I's cpu board. As far a
hacking, you only had to cut
some of the plastic vains off to allow access for some of the
cables. You used the
Model I's monitor for the display.
I'm sure I have the documentation around someplace for it, but I have no idea
where. So I don't remember who built the kit. Did a couple google searchs and
couldn't find anything on it, suprising.

Just ran across this looking for info on a Z-World Z80 ISA coprocessor card made in Davis, CA
http://books.google.com/books?id=4SkqFozu80MC&pg=PA37&lpg=PA37&dq="Z+world"+davis+Z-80
page 37 in "Embedded systems design using the Rabbit 3000 microprocessor" gives
a short history of Rabbit, which traces it's roots to Decmation, who made Z80 cards
for DEC machines.

Hi Tony, if you search for an amateur radio RTTY program then it will support this encoding. I dont recall any of the names offhand but there will be several available as open source.
I wrote my own RTTY and CW receive/transmit programs many years ago under DOS. The progs ran on my PCjr. I used an XR2211 for the tone detection, and I dont recall what for the transmit portion. I think I used the machines primitive audio generation facilities to generate the two necessary tones. I did the Baudot (sorry!) and CW encoding and decoding in software.
In any case it worked quite well and I made several contacts with this setup.

Subject: Looking for a 5-bit ITA2 terminal emulator
Message-ID: <m1UvuCP-000J4hC at p850ug1>

Before I write my own and reinvent the wheel(?), does anyone know of a
5-bit terminal emualtor using ITA2 (often mis-called 'Baudot' or 'Murray'
code) at 50 baud that runs on some classic computer (as that's all I have?).
Something that runs on an origianl IBM PC under MS-DOS would be fine...

I'm rebuilding an old Toshiba 610CT, and need some drivers. Know where I can find W95 drivers for PCMCIA Megahertz Xjack XJEM3288 card?
I have several diskettes for XJEM3233, but none for the 28.8 modem version.
Curious question, once again Google shows up just tons of those so called "drivers sites". Are there -any- of these that are legit?
(Yes, random site, I'd be happy to install your custom multi-megabyte downloader app just to download an 8k driver Zip.)
(I'll save my "dead zone" rant for another day)
All of this just for a real serial port! :)

We are going to be receiving 16 pallets of laptops shortly, and I am looking
for software that does not have to be installed, does not require an OS
(there is no hard drive in the laptops), and will export to something that I
can import into an Excel spreadsheet. Has anyone ever used this program, or
can you suggest an alternative?
http://www.gtopala.com/siw-tools/siw-viewer.html
We need to run a basic BIOS boot test, check the screen to make sure it is
not cracked or gouged, etc.
I also want to collect system info such as Manufacturer of the laptop, the
model number, the serial number, Processor type and speed, installed memory,
and if it has any goodies installed like webcam or wireless.
Preferably the program can be run from a USB stick, and will write the
system info back to the same stick. Then I can import the system info into
a spreadsheet.

Hi Folks!
Got a TeleVideo TS-802 going if anybody wants it. Will have to be
collected from near Preston, UK.
Unit is in very good cosmetic condition, no screen burn and comes with
keyboard. Sadly, it is no longer working. I believe the fault is either
in the PSU or the display section. Also, the drives have been removed

I'd love to give them to some that will do something with them besides
crush them and shred the documentation.

Well, yesterday, Patrik emailed me to tell me that he received the

So once again, a ClassicCmper-to-ClassicCmper long-distance exchange

This pleases me very much indeed.

I've been starting to trawlthrough my various big piles of miscellaneous / less interesting stuff that I haven't got round to doing anything with (or am ever likely to...) and have an Osborne 1a that did work ~6 years ago before it was consigned to a dark corner of the attic after an earlier clear out. From memory the monitor took ~20 seconds to warm up and work and there's also a missing key cap so it's far from a pristine, museum quality example. From my rather narrow perspective it isn't the most interesting or exciting of machines either. But it is free...
Is anyone interested in it? If so, I'd prefer someone to come and pick it up rather than go through the effort of packing / shipping etc as I'm basically lazy and don't want to do much more than drag it downstairs and throw a disk in it to see if it still works.
Collection may be possible from Bath / Swansea via one of my relatives if you can wait a month or two.

I am trying to get communication going from SIMH to my ASR33 connected to a
DECserver 90M. It works except for the Line Feed character. It seems the
DECserver is not passing the Line Feed through to the ASR33. I have looked
at the Telnet RFCs and I think I need option NAOLFD
(http://tools.ietf.org/rfc/rfc658.txt) but the DECserver responds with a
WONT when I modify SIMH to send this option.
Have I got the right option or is there another option I should be sending?
I also tried looking at the port options on the DECserver, and there doesn't
seem to be anything there that controls this. I had a go with a RAW telnet
listener on the DECserver but it didn't work at all.
Thanks

To close out the thread, that was where I was getting the 0x2a/0x2b
issue. INT2 (which is \ on some international KBs), is key number 42,
but sends scan code 43.
So, fixed the mappings, and now the KB is working well. I still have an
issue where the cursor keys send numerics to the XT when num lock is
on. Just a bit more debugging to do and I think it'll be done.
Anyone know of a DOS util that would report what key is being pressed
(for the esoteric ones, like print screen and pause break) or some other
way to test the tougher ones?

Just picked one of these up, sans keyboard. This may be the only HP
computer I'd dare to call "cute." I thought I had a keyboard that would
be compatible with it, but it turns out I do not -- anyone have one
going spare?
Thanks,
Josh
I have just popped an ST225 disk into my MicroVAX II to see if it works and
I get this status:
Device Device Error Volume Free Trans

Name Status Count Label Blocks Count

MICRO1$ sh dev micro1$dua0:/fu
Disk MICRO1$DUA0:, device type RD51, is online, host not available, file-
oriented device, shareable, available to cluster, error logging is
enabled.

I have done a quick search on the web and all I can see is that it may be
somehow related to clustering. Well, I netbooted the machine specifically
because I wanted to check out the disk. I have done this many times before
without issue.
What does this status mean?

Rob

Subject: update on my father
Very sorry to inform my father passed away in his sleep peacefully at home last night. His health had been deteriorating of late, and took turn for worse on the weekend. I will circle back around
soon, for now just wanted to give you all advance notice and look forward to discussing your thoughts as I am a bit fuzzy at present.

More info would help - what version, etc.
Josh has one of the more complete archives at http://yahozna.dyndns.org , Steve and Howard are the other "biggies" at
http://www.unixwiz.net/3b2/index.html and http://www.hartetechnologies.com/manuals/3b2/ respectively.
I would love to find more, especially info on the busses and hardware. I have a Version 3 unit that's 1/2-3/4 running and
ineffectually prodded at from time to time, but I could possibly get some stuff off of it.
