Hi all --
I'm attempting to get my 8/L talking to the outside world. It's
outfitted with the typical Teletype interface, which I'm attempting to
connect to a PC via acurrent loop to RS232 adapter.
Specifically, I've got one of these:

At the moment I have it configured (per the manual) assuming the 8/L is
an active loop device (i.e. the converter's transmit lines connect to
the 8/L's receive lines, and the 8/L's transmit lines connect to the
converter's receive lines). With this configuration I'm able to get the
8/L to send data to the PC successfully.
I'm not having much luck getting the8/L to receive anything from the PC,
however. If I put my multimeter in the loop, I see a current of about
40mA, which drops to between 30 and 37mA when the PC is sending data
(depending on what data's being sent). However, I'm not getting much of
anything onpin "E" of the W076 (Teletype Connector) board -- this is
supposed to be the "Logic Output" and I'm assuming that should be the
TTL-level data signal, correct?
I do see a very, very tiny signal (in the millivoltrange) on pin "E"
that matches up with the data being sent from the PC, but it's obviously
nowhere near the correct level. I've gone over the W076 board and
checked the related diodes and resistors for anything open/shorted. And
I actually did find a bad diode (fell apart when I desoldered one leg to
test) but replacing it made no apparent difference.
At this point I'm wondering if the loop configuration I have is
incorrect. I thought this was supposed to be a 20mA loop, but I'm
getting 40mA. I know very little about the fundamentals of current loop
stuff, so I could be way off here.
Anyone have any advice?

Hi, All,
Tangential to my Mac128K repair, I now have an OA-D34V-22 drive but my
Mac128K board came with -A ROMs, as I have mentioned previously. I
have found pictures of various models of this drive, and I know about
what models work with what ROMs, but what I haven't been able to find
out is what changed that old firmware doesn't work with newer drives.
For search terms (and later documentation of this topic), here's the matrix...

>From my reading, it seems to have something to do with the stepper
motor, but I haven't turned up any details. My guess is the original
stepper pulse frequency or pulse width doesn't drive the motors on the
newer drives correctly, but does anyone here know what the changes are
and why? My solution to what hardware I have is still going to be to
replace the -A ROMs with -B ROMs, but I just wanted to learn more.

Im bringing a 12 foot trailer full of goodies out to VCFMW. Friday
night ill let everyone raid the trailer, deals will be made so I dont
have to haul it all inside. So get there early and get some good deals.
Does anyone here have any clue where I can find 6-32 1/4" screws with torx
heads of the sort one would use to secure hard drives? The only source I
know is scrouging HP stuff and I'd really like a better source than that.

McMaster-Carr and MSC are some places that come to mind. If you need a lot,
there are fastener companies that specialize in these things. Check
your local
phone listings.

Hi,
a frienbd of mine phoned me, he currently is at the facility from a
electronics recycler, looking at what a previous guy has left over from a
Nixdorf Targon/35. (desoldered the cpu(s) with an hot air gun)
He pulled the cipher M891340 9 track drive and is looking at the disk bays
now. There are "NEC DKU 743" drives, couldn't find anything with google.
What kind of drives are that? Interface?

I'm repairing an Apple II keyboard, where I needed to replace a defunct
MM5740-AAE/N.
I bought a couple of new MM5740-AAE/N from Littlediode, they arrived and
have
a quite modern aspect and National logo, while the old broken IC has no
logo.
Maybe they are coming from a more modern production...
I tried both on the keyboard, same behaviour:
the keyboard itself works, but I receive wrong key codes from it.
I checked with another keyboard, computer is working fine.
I double-checked the MM5740 marking, it's absolutely correct.
Of course I checked for sticky bits, or logic problems, but nothing strange
there.
I wrote down a key "replacement" table, and from what I see these AAE
encoders are generating codes exactly like they was AAD version...
Maybe here there's a problem of wrong markings over the ICs?
Anybody ever heard of similar issues, or bought these encoders from
Littlediode and had similar problems?
I suspect that they came from a production lot wrongly-marked.

All,
As a few of you know, I have the old Encore Multimax from Purdue,
which came to me by way of Pat Finnigan's collection. I plan to get
her running (at least power her up and see what sparks fly) in the
next few weeks as long as the weather remains "fall-ish."
I'm wondering how many of these are left? The CHM in Silicon Valley
seems to have one, but the one they have seems very different from
mine. As of 1995 Brown University seems to have had one, but I don't
know if they still have it or if it is scrapped.
There is also 0 documentation and software on bitsavers. I'll gladly
send stuff over to them once I figure out what I'm doing with mine.
Are there any other of these systems left?

This is a long shot, but: I got a bare H9273 backplane (9-slot Qbus,
18-bit) off a fellow list member. It's been languishing in my parts
area for a while while I try to figure out what to do with it. If
someone happens to have a bare card cage that fits it (I think it's
mechanically identical, or at least compatible, to the H9276), I'd
be much obliged and would pay a reasonable sum of money for it. I
don't need a full H9273 backplane/cage assembly, since my entire
intent is to make use of the backplane I have.
Otherwise, if anyone has any experience designing and fabricating
card cages on the cheap, I'd be interested. I initially considered
doing something out of wood, since I don't have much in the way of
metalworking tools, but that presents some obvious airflow issues.
It's still looking like the best option for me if I just cut the
sides away aside from some columns for mounting the plastic card
guides.

Sigh. For most of what I've done today, my DEC Rainbow would actually

If you intend to use your serial interface with to load RIM/BIN formatted
tapes you may need to implement the READER ENABLE signal. This signal comes
>from the M706 module and goes to the CTS signal on the serial port. Your
terminal emulator can be programmed to only transmit when the CTS signal is
active. This signal will also allow you to modify the TTY port to run at
much higher speeds than the standard 110 baud.

Hi!
I found a Z80 based machine.
Externally looked like an XT clone, with a wooden (!) case.
Inside, I found a Z80 based MB (all chips are socketed) and a
WD-1001 card. Yes, there's a floppy drive, and HD and a unusual tape
streamer.
On the rear, six DB15 female ports and a 50pin connector.
The label says EMI Computer Systems Italy, Model 80/30 (BTW it's
different from the IMSAI 80/30).
I read the 4k (2732) EPROM, which contains a small monitor, allowing to
boot from various sources. Nothing more.
I assumed the six ports to be serial ports.
I connected a terminal (virtual, putty) through a null modem cable (the
one I used for all console operation) and powered the machine up.
Floppy and HD led were lit, but saw no activity on the ports. I tried
various speeds (1200, 2400, 4800, 9600).
The reset switch makes the HD led go off and on, so something still
works...

I haven't any info about this old beast, so can't tell if it's broken or
I'm wrong somewhere. Must try without the null modem cable...

I had to fix some Lisa keyboards, and here is what I finally came up with
after a week or two of experimenting that produces perfect pads.
Woodland Scenics 5mm HO track bed for the foam, as others suggested ($1 for 24" x 2")
Maudlin PL10-0075 .0075 x 10 x 20 plastic shim stock for the back (about $10 with shipping)
Michaels metalized mylar sheets for the pads (a couple bucks for several square feet)
Get a
Disc Cutter with 7 Punch 1/4" to 5/8" from ebay ($28)

This is critial (see below)
Cut the foam and shim stock to 10" x 9/16"
Cut strips of mylar long enough and wide enough to apply to the foam
Attach the shim stock to the mylar with Scotch Super 77 spray adhesive
Do the same with the mylar, metal side against the foam, with enough tension so it is smooth.
You only have about a second to fiddle with the mylar before the adhesive starts to set!
Shim the disc cutter so the strips just fit through the upper and lower plates without binding.
Then use and arbor press or non-metal mallet to punch the discs, mylar side up. You'll get about
15 discs per strip. I experimented with a leather punch, and even tried a 11mm cigar punch, but the
only way I could get perfectly straight cuts through the foam was with the disc cutter.
So far, I've identified the following systems that need pad replacements

I was thinking of making a bunch, but changed my mind after finding what a PITA they are to make.
The other thing I discovered was Elmers School Glue Sticks work the best for attaching old pads and plastic to new foam.

I have here an alignment disc from EMM 200TPI DIBIT patern.
It's a cartridge for a top loading drive like the CDC Hawk or DEC RL02.
The disc is new in box including original invoice from 1979.
It was stored in dry place inside the house, a quick visual inspection learn
that it seems to be in good state no corrosion.
I don't have any use for it (doesn't fit in my HP disc drives ;)
So it's for trade or a little beer money + shipping.
Trade is preferred..

Thank you for your generous donations to the STEM program I'm working
on. I have a question or two about the punch cards I've received.
Some of the cards have printing on one side, and are "dog eared" or
have the angled corner on one end.
Other cards have the printing reversed; the dog-ear corner is on the
other end of the card when I'm looking at the printing.
If those cards with the reversed "cut corner" or "dogear" were used in
the same machine as the first set of cards, they'd be read
"backwards." ... so why the two different formats?

I have a variety of Televideo related items that I would like to find a
buyer for. I acquired these through the acquisition of a very large lot
of vintage computer related items last year, and really didn't have any
strong interest in the Televideo items at the time. However, now that
I've had them for a year, I am starting to like them -- but don't have the
room to keep them, unfortunately. Time to move them to a better home
where they will be enjoyed.
Highlights include:
- 5 TS-806/20's Computer/Servers
- 28 (Probably a few more) Serial Terminals/User Stations (925, 970,
TS-800, TS-800A, TS-802, TS-802H, TS-803, TS-803H, etc.), and keyboards.
- 1 TeleVideo TPC 1 Portable
- Lots of RS-422 networking cables, manuals, documentation, etc.

I would like to add, that this lots is not in the greatest of condition.
Definitely not museum quality. Lots of it needs some TLC to clean it up.
Some (most) of the items have some marker writing on them (as the
pictures show). Lots of scratches, etc. IIRC, all of the items I tested
worked, but I didn't test everything, and only tested a small fraction of
items. The 5 TS-806/20's all worked, but I think only one of the
hard-drives actually worked. I had several TS-80x's network booting off
a TS-806/20 via RS-422, with TurboDos, and that was pretty neat.
As far as shipping, since most of these are either really big and bulky, or
heavy, I'd prefer to not ship them. I would probably consider shipping
any of the other items (manuals, etc.), but I'm going to hold out for a
little while to see if anyone is interested in the entire lot before I
piece it out.

Hi, All,
A list member recently sent me a broken Mac128 logic board. I quickly
found a bad solder joint from a previous repair where one of the
original 64Kbit DRAMs was replaced with a socket, but I'm still having
issues.
The Mac does "bong" and I do get a "Sad Mac" with a hex code. It
claims it's the same chip that is now socketed (G8). If that DRAM is
installed, I get "Mac in Jail" bars. If that DRAM is removed, I get
black pixels where that chip was. The other odd symptom is, between
the bars, a semi-regular sparse grid of on-pixels. It's not a perfect
pattern across the screen; it's mostly on the right side, and not
always top to bottom in a column. It does look regular, as if it's
every 64 bytes or some other power-of-2, and 5% of the pixels blink as
if they are changing in software.
I know that Apple-branded DRAMs of this era are dodgy. I could just
clip them all out and replace them with fresh, *tested* chips (I have
a DIP DRAM tester), but I am concerned that the fault is elsewhere
since a known-good DRAM always produces a stuck-on bit (the "jail
bars"). That smells to me like a bad gate upstream of the RAM field.
Looking at the available schematics, unbuffered DOUT D0-D15 go several
places - a pair of '244s to buffer the data bus, a pair of '166 shift
registers for video data out, a pair of '161s for sound data out, and
a 16R8 PAL named ASG that appears to be related to sound and diskette
PWM. The DIN side of the data bus connects to the '244 bus buffers,
the CPU, the ROMs, the IWM, the 6522 VIA, and the Z8530 SCC. I would
think that if that side of the bus had a stuck bit, the CPU would be
fetching bad data from the ROMs, so there wouldn't even be a Sad Mac.
I can do some catastrophic repair by blindly pulling all the RAM and
replacing it, and I can even pull the CPU and socket it so I can stick
my Fluke 9010A on the board and do some serious memory tests and
exercise the bus and poke at it with an oscilloscope. What I'm asking
for at this point is any information that can help me target my
efforts. It seems like this sort of fault would have been common in
the day, but mostly when I google "Sad Mac" or "jail bars", I get
stuff about replacing individual RAM chips or changing SIMMs in an
SE/30.
So anyone have any advice that could help me not remove and replace
320 solder joints on a multi-layer board? Yes, I can do it, but it's
a lot of time to do it well. I'd just like to get this old Mac
working with an original board (I have working 512K boards, but the
point is to have an Original Mac in time for display next January).

It shows 48mA as being the maximum recommended sink current, which certainly guarantees being free from damage at that level. The only spec I find which guarantees the output voltage specifies just 16mA. I conservatively went with that figure. In contrast, the 7439 datasheet does specify output voltage at 48, 60 and 80mA.

I have a DEC TSZ07-CA 9-track drive, in a desktop cabinet, that I got a
couple of years ago. It was one of those situations where I had to have
it, but had no use for it! Dug it out to play with, but it doesn't seem to
power on.
Anything special to get this thing to turn on? I'm assuming the PSU
doesn't work, or has issues, but I've not tried to figure it out yet.
Just wondering if it won't turn on because there is no tape loaded, etc.

Original Apple Macintosh M0001 128K -- early model with just "Macintosh" on
the rear badge (later models say "Macintosh 128K"). This is a functional
machine, but I think the floppy drive will likely need to be replaced. I
got it with a floppy stuck in it, and the floppy is now out, but the drive
doesn't appear to be aligned with the hole on the case. Probably what was
making the floppy stick. The drive might be fixable, not sure. It's
probable that the eject motor is bad due to it having a stuck floppy. It's
in pretty decent shape otherwise. There is some corrosion on the battery
terminals, but at least the terminals are still present! Probably a quick
fix with a replacement floppy drive. Will not ship (unless you are willing

My PDP-8/E stopped working at the weekend, which is a bit of a nuisance
as I need it working for the DEC Legacy event at Windermere in October
-- and I'm going on holiday on Friday so won't have much real time to
deal with it and prepare my talk before then.
In the meantime I've "fixed" the problem by replacing a dead 8881 bus
driver (E23 on the display board, drives D0-D3 from the switches) with
an SN7401. It works with M8300+M8310 CPU, M8330 timing board and M8320
bus loads, but probably doesn't have enough drive capability for a full
system. IIRC an 8881 should be capable of sinking 70mA with Vol=0.8V,
while a 7401 is only guaranteed for 16mA. I've calculated the
terminators alone need 23mA plus around 1.6mA per load (20 loads in a
medium system?), and DEC sometimes used selected 7401s marked 97401
presumably for this reason.
Anyone got practical experience of substituting for an 8881?

--- The SN7439 is commonly taken as a proper replacement for the DEC8881. I see a couple 7439's available on eBay at the moment. Also, questcomp.com is showing DEC8881 in stock at $10 each at quantity-two. Some have mentioned substituting 7438 as a lower spec version. I see from the datasheet that it does have the same schematic as the 7439. However, it doesn't actually guarantee more than 16mA output sink current.

Perhaps one of the 4404/5/6 line, which were variously marketed as
Smalltalk workstations or AI workstations. Though Tek had other

The 4404 family originally ran a Unix clone whose name escapes me, but
switched to UTek, derived from BSD 4.2. My hazy memory suggests that UTek
1.x might have been the clone, and UTek 2.x and later BSD.
I called Keytronics, and they said they have not made these since 1992 or
1993. They gave the name and phone of Mil-Key in WA, 509-891-6425. They
said they MIGHT still have some available there.
They also said Cherry capacitive keyboards use the same technology, and are
still in production.
Last tidbit of info, she said these foil and foam pads are also known as
"deccofelt pads".

Whose drive is it? DEC didn't make any 9-track drives themselves. I
looked it up, and it
looks like a Cipher. We had one of those direct from Cipher, and it was
a total piece of crap. You had to open up the top and manually help it
to thread, and as the drive powered the NCR SCSI adapter hung on the
back, you had to leave it powered on all the time to not hang the SCSI
bus. About every month or two, a read channel chip would die. We
got a bunch of the custom chips from Cipher, but it became too much
hassle to replace these chips constantly. The Cipher would definitely turn
on without a tape, but I guess there's just a power LED. The only way
it knows there is a tape is to try to load it.

Right but naturally who would have thought that a bunch of fanatics would be trying to use the hardware after 30 years or that the foam would even do that. I would have never expected that black tar to show up if i hadnt had to clean it up or hear others experience it as well.
Does anyone know what systems these types of cartridges were used in?
I have 10 of these, and they are all filled with IBM 8" Floppies as shown.
I am curious, because they don't go to anything that came in the large lot
of items I got last year, and have been a mystery since. I doubt they are
useful for anything, but are pretty neat.

Hi all,
I'm finally starting to learn using a PDP-11 OS and one thing I'd like to
(continue to) do is working on some text. So I've starting to learn (or
cope?) with TECO. Found a TECO.SAV on some RT-11 Sigtape to run on RT-11XM.
But as the SimH console running the RT-11 is happy typing in lowercase
letters, it all goes uppercase inside of TECO.
Is there something I need to do to get lowercase working for TECO?
.SET TT: LC doesn't seem to work and doesn't seem to be needed as the RT-11
prompt happily accepts (and shows) lowercase. It's just that TECO seems to
be flipping the console or input to uppercase.
Any ideas or standard tips&tricks/hacks on using TECO on RT-11?

I'm wondering if anyone on list is willing to listen to some somewhat
complex (in my opinion) small power transformer questions (off-list)?
I've exhausted my more straightforward options for a C64 PSU, and am
trying a different idea to get to the end goal. But, transformers were
and are not my strong suit, and I need to find a 1:5 or 1:6 power
transformer that works on 50/60 Hz and can handle 9VA on the secondary
windings.

Pretty good guesses you made. The association PDP-8/E and OMNIBUS is correct. But yes there existed two full-sized buses DEC had rented for the WESCON 1970 show. But yes people (lets say mostly professionals) back then began to buy computers. But yes the label is original. And yes it was a promotion by DEC.

This may be a silly question, but I'm looking for confirmation that dssd (double sided single density) 8" floppies are usable in a sssd (single sided single density) drive such as the Shugart SA800.
If so, can the floppy be manually flipped over and the other side also be read and written to, therefore having both side containing data?

It's in the TECO Pocket Guide - here's the ET bits for TECO-11 (with

Seems plausable. Finding or making some sort of DA15 breakout device might be
useful to track it down. Disconnecting each of the keyboard and mouse signals
in turn might reveal if one of those is responsible. Just putting a scope on
them might show which is a likely culprit. However, knowing which signal is
responsible won't help much unless it can be disconnected permanently. There
are keyboard and mouse connectors on the system unit of some models of
VAXstation 3100 but not on the VAXstation 2000.

I just collected a VAXstation 2000 that has an AUI connector on the back.
The trouble is that the connector is a bit strange. It has screw holes like
you might get for screwing in a serial cable or a video cable, rather than
the locking slider that grips some studs on the cable you are connecting (or
a transceiver in my case).
Is it possible to get an AUI cable or a transceiver that will fit this
connector or must I physically modify something I already have?

tape drive connected to their Straight-8 and another newer 8. The RCS/RI
group has a Tennecomp tape drive on their 8/I, but it is in unknown
condition.

I will be putting my Electronika 85, a Russian clone of the DEC Pro 350 up
for sale on eBay tomorrow ( Friday the 13th) at noon. It doesn't power up,
but other than that it's in good condition. I have found the schematics and
some technical documentation (in Cyrillic, of course) that will be
available to the buyer.
When I first got this computer around 9-10 years ago, I checked the power
supply and I think is the culprit, as there was no juice at the leads at
all. It has a very tiny fuse and it;s impossible to tell if it may be at
fault.
The last one on Ebay was up for sale at around 3000-3500 and was a working
one complete with monitor and keyboard. This one is waaaaay more
reasonable, even if it is not working.
I'll post the auction reference number in the am when I finish up the
auction listing in the morning.

One of these nifty Esprit 350C terminals Cindy was noting a week or so
ago has arrived, but I can't find a manual online anywhere. I have
figured out how to get to the config screen, but can't figure out how to
get the terminal to try to connect to an ip address.
Anyone have a manual or know how to do that?

I recently acquired three of these Xebec XFD-108 dual-drive units along
with three PDP-8/Ms and a PDP-8/E. It looks like I've got one 8/M and drive
fully booting. However, I also seem to have a lot of bad media. Here's an

I'm trying to find some more info on the Xebec drive units. They use
Memorex drives, which date to 1974 or so. These use 32 hard sector
floppies, with the sector holes on the outside. I'm currently writing some
software to back up these floppies and will try to integrate it with David
Gesswein's dumprest utility so I can eventually get a handler working in
simh. For now, though, I'm trying to just back up the floppies as to
protect against further data deterioration. The floppies are actually
configured for 10 sectors, oddly enough. This gives 640 256-word blocks per
disk.
Has anyone used these early Xebec drives? In my little bit of
documentation, I seem to be missing the chapter on the device handler for
OS/8. I have a few booting floppies right now, so I should be able to get
the handler from one of those, but just in case... It would also be nice to
have the FORMAT program for this system, which is yet again something else
missing from my docs.
Also, I haven't yet played with it, but I also have a Tennecomp tape drive
that uses radio-station-style 4-track "carts" to store data on serially. I

Has anyone had any experience using 'Vector Graphic Extended Monitor 4.x' in systems other then a Vector Graphic machine?
I have a Flashwriter II card that I want to install into an IMSAI, and I was wondering if VG's Extended Monitor would be a good choice. The main reason to use the the Vector Graphic Extended Monitor would be because it come with the drivers for the Flashwriter II card.

So I took a chance on an eBay auction for a really beat up HP 9830A
desktop (and spent more than I probably should have, alas),and it
arrived on my doorstep this evening.
This machine has taken a beating and has clearly been salvaged from; I'm
missing the main CPU and RAM boards, andseveral keyswitches are broken
off (and long gone.)
So first:
- It's a long shot but does anyone out there have any spares for this
machine? (CPU and RAM, but also plastic parts like the plastic keyboard
plate which have been utterly destroyed would be nice...)
- The keys look kind of similar to the ones on my 9825 -- anyone know if
they use the same keyswitches before I dig mine outof storage and take
the time to open it up to see? (Just looking for possible option for
sourcing keys, finding a parts-only 9825 keyboard is likely to be much
easier than finding a spare 9830...).
Second:
It looks like this thing has beenupgraded with an Infotek Systems RX-30,
and an MP-30 + FP-30 boardset (so perhaps I'm not missing the CPU after
all?)But I'm unsure that it's complete -- in particular it looks like
I'm missing the larger of the two boards here:

the MP-30 boards. I'm guessing the missing board is pure unobtanium at
this point... however, as is clear in the photo it's labeled as "BASIC
ROM II" and only contains what look like a few mask ROMs. My

replacement processor (and those two boards in the picture don't look
like much of a processor to me) and the MP-30 is an optional I/O
processor that goes with it -- the "Mass Memory Interface Processor"
(pics here - http://www.hpmuseum.net/images/Infotek_MP30-45.jpg).
Can anyone confirm what boards are supposed to be present for a complete
CPU set? The presence of four 2901's plus a bunch of EPROMs on the
MP-30 boardset make me wonder if there's more to the MP-30 than just I/O...

There is at least one more option - get a readymade cable designed for use in
these cases. I came across a hoard of these by DEC once but sadly, not knowing
what they were for, I only saved one sample. It is a BNE4E-02 - I suspect the
02 is the length as it is 2m long. The connector at the machine end is right
angled. I also use it with my Alphaserver 2100 which has the same issue.
Maybe someone else was sensible enough to save more of these cables?

I have three external DDS2 DAT drives for a Unisys machine I've been
restoring, and none of them work. The original owner of the machine
warned me they were not reliable, but I've actually found them quite
reliably non-functioning.
I performed the prerequisite Google search for information on repairing
these drives, and instead I got results about services who repair them.
I'm all for that, but of course which one to pick? So here I am, tapping
into the Group Wisdom.
Anyone have direct experience with such a firm in the United States?
Those to avoid are every bit as useful as those you recommend.

Here is a howto to show you how to get your NeXTSTEP/OpenStep Boxes
online with ease. I wrote it with simplicity in mind, following this
howto you should have your box online in about 10 minutes
Getting Your NeXTstation On the Internet- Applies to NeXTStep/OpenStep
on Black and white hardware along with Sparc/PA Risc
Putting OpenStep 4.2/NeXTStep 3.3 online is relatively easy
Step 1. Enable Root Access
Go into Prefs Under NeXTApps and then click the lock icon, create a
password, this is the password for the Me User. Once thats done, Logout.
You will be at the login screen
Login as root with no password
Step 2. Run Simple Network Starter
Make sure the radio button Use The Network but dont share administrative
data is selected. Then Enter the IP address of your choice. Once thats
done click network options and enter Router, Netmask and broadcast
address of your network.
Then Click Configure, The system will reboot
Upon Reboot login as root again
Open a terminal window and type the following command
pico /etc/resolv.conf
Enter the following in Pico
nameserver 8.8.8.8
nameserver 8.8.4.4
I used the google public DNS servers for an example, but any DNS Server
will work
CTRL -O to save the file
CTRL- X to exit pico
Then Reboot your system.
Again Login as root
Open A terminal window and type ping google.com. At this point you
should be getting a response from google. And thats it, that is all
there is to getting your NeXTstation/OpenStep/NeXTstep Powered Boxes
online.

cleanout. I'm a typewriter enthusiast, and didn't know that it was not a
typewriter. Would it be worth attempting to sell, or should I just hook it
up to a computer somehow and log my every keystroke for shiggles? Or use it
as a bizarre dot-matrix typewriter?

Unfortunately I don't have a RK05, even if I REALLY would to know
somebody in willing to sell one...
Anyway, I followed the former and the latter post about PLL to sync
12-sector cartridges as 16-sector,
but I have some question about how the circuit should work.
In the hardware sectoring, the pulses is needed to identify in precise
way the physical boundary between
one sector and the neightbors.
Clearly the 12-sectors will have 12 dents, while the 16 -sectors 16
dents.. plain.
Now I could take a signal coming from a 12-sectors cartridge sensor,
pass it through a
PLL and produce a signal with 16/12 times the frequency, that is
synchronized with the original
signal... could it work?
Maybe I missing something, but I think is not that easy...
In fact, you expect to produce 4 pulses every 3 pulses of the reference
signal.
As the 4/3 ratio is not an integer multiple, only 1 every 4 pulses will
be aligned with the hardware pulses,
thus we would have a phase uncertain of 1/3 of physical hardware sector.
Probably, if the cartridge is started and synchronized, it could
continue to work correctly until the
whole stuff is stopped and restarted. In this situation it could work in
33% of the cases,
being misaligned of 1/3 or 2/3 of sector in remaining cases..
To fix it all, there would be a way to generate a secondary pulse to
identify a particular dent.
In this way, the regenerated sectors would always synchronize to the
very same phase,
removing the phase uncertain...

packs with 16 sectors (PDP8) than drives. I have some 12 slot packs as well.
But I could need more 16 sector packs.
I have access to some masses of 12 sector packs... Probably I'm not alone with
that situation.
If there's enough interest it could be possible to machine new center hubs for
the packs. With custom sectoring. I'm quite sure that the biggest part of the
cost would be the programming and setup of the CNC that turns the hubs. Then
changing the sectoring to customer demands will probably cheap and easy. So the
idea of making new center hubs could be quite interesting for the folks who need
the same pack style for other computers with other sectoring. I know of IBM 1130
and some HP computers using the same packs which were originally an IBM idea.
Any comments? Interested? Your feedback helps me to decide if it's reasonable to
do it or better put the idea into the trash.
An important point would be the amount of cash one is willing to pay for
one center hub.
