I was told, by whom I do not remember, that the IBM 360 was designed in
APL, starting in 1962. There's a paper about it, "A Formal Description
of System/360," which was entirely written using APL notation. The
first APL compiler that IBM used was written by Larry Breed and Philip
Abrams in Fortran IV and ran on the IBM 7090 under IBSYS.
