I was weaned on HP-2000's and Old PDPs. I did get to poke at a CDC
6400 as a larval stage human.

You must must mean missing IRON computing compared to classic BIG iron
computing. :)
In some ways the Z80 marked the end of home-brew computing in that one
often scrounged up cheaper parts for one's machine. If you could afford
the gold standard 4 MHZ z80, one could afford the rest of the machine.
