901B is the first pocket calculator I remember - I don't know if there were
earlier ones.
I don't think they're exactly rare but later ones such as MX10 are
certainly easier to find. They're often in the same case as a 901B but with
slightly enhanced functionality such as 10 digits. % key etc.

I am familiar with the first HP desktop calculator (9100A) that inspired their first
handheld calculator (HP-35). The HP-35 was a ten-digit calculator that was released in
1972 for $395.

No photos. Sorry, I didn't have an iPhone when I was a college freshman
in 1965. I never saw one, anyway. We got by with Monroe and Friden
mechanical calculators, full of gears and cams. One of them could even
do square roots.

I saw one in late 1972.
In 1972, however, you could get a Silent 700, and connect to a timesharing
machine over telephone.
Although the HP-35 was the first "pocket calculator" from HP, it was not
the first handheld calculator.
In 1970 or 1971, Wang had a tiny desktop calculator that had a card
reader! The card reader was an external peripheral, that clam-shell closed
on individual port-a-punch cards (perforated normal sized cards using
every other column)
In fact, by 1972, there was even a handheld calculator made in France; one
of my bosses in 1972 had that. It was kept in my desk drawer, and they
called me "Head of computing services" in bidding on at least one
contract. A completely undeserved title, just because I did a little
programming in FORTRAN and APL, and was the keeper of the calculator.

On the one that I got achance to play with, the part on top of the
table was tiny, and the rest was underneath the table, as Rick mentioned.
There were probably other models.
It has been said that when Radio Shack's engineers showed the working
prototype of the TRS80 to the execs, that the CEO looked under the table
to try to "see where the rest of it is".
I also got one of the card readers from some junk! (at the Foothill swap)
My plan was exactly the same as yours.
But, life got in the way, and it never came to be.

My dad had one of those in '72-ish. IIRC he paid just under $400 for it.
It was a complete game-changer. His business sold cotton farming
implements, and Dad said that the ability to calculate the bottom line
without having to go to a desk almost doubled his new-customer sales.
We talk a lot about the technical aspects and advantages of gear like
this, but I think it's difficult to remember just how much effect
mobilization had in everyday life.
Also IIRC, year or so later a TI calculator with more functions, more
digits, and twice the battery life cost about $100
