Of course--it all depends on the sound-making mechanism. A plastic
cornet is still a brass instrument, as is an ophicleide or a serpent
being labrosones. The actual construction material doesn't really
matter. A metal clarinet is still a woodwind as is a saxophone or a
flute or bassoon. So a contrabass tuba fitted with a contrabassoon
bocal is technically, not a brass instrument; neither is a tromboon.
