Sounds like a fun project and thank you for taking that on.
The only guide I know of is this one <https://zenodo.org/records/13828372>,
which is a good starting point.
Other than the obvious cleaning tips. I think one suggestion often missed
is to use your ears. You can really hear when a disk read is going bad.
