I agree with you but phrased differently. XMODEM is ubiquitous but CBBS created a totally new way of sharing information and is the forerunner of everything from CompuServe to the internet, instant messaging and even social media. Most people reading an obit would not appreciate the significance of a data transfer protocol however the first "social media" type message system they would understand.
