That was my thought as well.

cleared by 2nd switch
Due to the vintage nature of the device, separating the
switches and
wiring them this way would require doing some invasive modification of
the unit, and it's not mine to modify. Though, I agree with other
comments, this S-R latch idea is a cool one.
